The 300 West 15th Street
Block Association
Letters the Association has written recently:
Letter against Chelsea Market expansion
(April 2011)
A letter about the Gansevoort waste facility
(sent to a number of state and local politicians)
A letter about Ninth Avenue
(emailed to CB 4 Transportation Commitee):
At a meeting of the 300 W 15th St Block Association last night, we spent a
lot of time discussing the potential changes to Ninth Avenue between 14th
and 16th Streets. There was strong consensus about two issues:
1. Everyone hated the idea of a large median strip in the middle of Ninth
Avenue. It would accumulate rats and garbage, and eventually someone
would be killed trying to get across the second set of lanes of traffic
during one light. (I've noticed this on upper Broadway: no one is willing to
stop and wait in that creepy median strip.)
2. Everyone liked the idea of splitting the new pedestrian space between
the east side and the west side of Ninth Avenue. This might allow for trees
on both sides of the street. It would still give plenty of additional space to
Chelsea Market (the space in front of which is always bustling but never
too crowded). Plus, the sidewalk on the east side of Ninth Avenue
between 14th and 15th Streets is nearly blocked in warm weather when
the two restaurants there have tables out on the sidewalk. It is certainly as
crowded as the one on the West side (which will be much less crowded
with Markt gone).
